Barena- from the Venetian word Baro, in turn derived from the Celtic word Barre- indicates the Venetian lagoon area which lies between solid ground and the lagoon, which is rich with fjord and small islands. Barena is inspired by a passion for rediscovering Venetian traditions, and is informed by research conducted whithin the Venetian estuary, which revealed charming ways of life and customs. The Barena collections are in fact inspired by the clothing of the inhabitants of these places. Many of the items in the collection are interpretations of one-of-a-kind pieces found in museums, antique markets or in books which portray images of the time. The Barena collection is not only characterised by traditions, but also by the use and interpretation of very high quality natural fabrics, from wools to linens. The choice of fabrics, all rigorously Italian, reveals a desire to safeguard the national textile heritage. Particular attention is paid to details and finishings which make each garment unique, yet simple. Thus a product is born which is entirely created and produced in the Venetian hinterland.

BEAMS was founded in 1976, from a small 19 square metre shop in Harajuku, Tokyo. In the following years it would attempt to “change the culture and customs of Japan’s youth”, as written in its mission statement at the time. Today BEAMS is made up of a network of carefully selected, Tokyo-based shops, which aim to offer substance over matter whilst adding value to the clothing industry. BEAMS now has 25 labels branching out into many fields beyond fashion, such as coffee, interior design, music, art and fashion design. Engineered Garments took its brand name from a pattern maker hired to draft patterns for the first collection. She claimed that the clothes were not designed but engineered due to the vast amount of detailing featured in each garment. The designer of the collection, Daiki Suzuki, agreed. Details from American sportswear, outdoor clothing, and military uniforms are all included in the collection and give Engineered Garments a unique look characterised by practical details, which are missing in much of American sportswear today.

Twenty years ago in Hermosa Beach on the Californian coast a clothing company was set up which soon became a landmark department store on the local scene and a breeding ground for the creation of numerous brands with a local and urban/folk flavour. These include Monitaly blazers, Chamula scarves and hats, as well as the “Thousands of Autumn” range, whose Cherokee feel inspires patterned moccasin boots, and the “Santo Domingo Boots” range with its lace-up ankle boots and lace-up shoes in suede. Meg Company’s ongoing quest is to create products that preserve the typical characteristics of their place of origin, whilst incorporating more urban and contemporary features.
